ENGLISH: «Stüssi’s JazzBuzz» is a project that has riped for a long time. Félix Stüssi has always been a composer in the true sense of the word. His approach is very eclectic. The result, however, is homogeneous and authentic. This is mostly due to the fact that he has studied (masters degree in ethnomusicology, University of Zurich, 1997) and incorporated the different sources of inspiration into his own playing and writing.

            Félix Stüssi creats songs and sounds like a painter with a vaste choice of colors. He is not afraid of unusual mixes, such as confronting modernity with tradition. Therefore it is not surprising that Stüssi's music is of refreshing actuality without neglecting the roots. It could be called «post retro worldjazz». Colors in the head of the composer are one thing, but it also takes the right canvas to paint on. Stüssi's new quintet unites some of Canada's finest young talents.

            Félix Stüssi himself was born in the Glarus valley, Switzerland. Originally self-taught on the piano, he soon became a successful performer and sideman. He has attended masterclasses with Irene Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Christoph Baumann, Art Lande and Vince Benedetti. In 1996 he won the first prizes (best soloist; best band) at the Zollikon Jazz Festival, Switzerland. Félix Stüssi moved to Montréal in 1998 where he lives today and pursues a career as a pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader.

            Alex Côté on alto sax is one of the rising stars of the Canadian Jazz scene. Despite his young age he is already engaged in an international career. In April 2004 he followed an invitation to Switzerland to represent Canada in the EBU Jazz Orchestra (the Jazz Bigband of the European Broadcasting Union), occupying the first chair of the alto saxophones. He has recorded with his own group, the «No Name Sextette», as well as with the «Effendi Jazz Lab». Bruno Lamarche on tenor sax also has made his mark on the local and national Jazz scene. As a member of the «Bernard Primeau jazz ensemble» he has had the chance to record with the legendary guitarist Philip Catherine. He plays in several other bands, for instance with Joel Miller, another well-known Montreal-based sax player and composer. Alex Côté and Bruno Lamarche are old friends but it is the first time that they perform together - what a duo!

            The same thing is true for Clinton Ryder, double bass, and Isaiah Ceccarelli, drums. They form one of the tightest rhythm sections in town. Clinton grew up in Nanaimo, British Columbia. He has worked freelance since 1993 and has recorded about fifteen albums with different Canadian artists. Isaiah, too, was born in the Canadian West but has grown up in California. After studies at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and in Paris among others with Daniel Humair, he has settled in Montreal. In 2004 he toured with the «Effendi Jazz Lab» as well as with Benoît Charest and «Les Triplettes de Belleville».

DEUTSCH: Das Projekt «Stüssi’s JazzBuzz» ist die Frucht eines langen, musikalischen Reifeprozesses. Als Komponist im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes, fügt Félix Stüssi verschiedenste Einflüsse zu einem homogenen, eigenständigen Ganzen zusammen. Dieses heikle Unternehmen gelingt nicht zuletzt, weil Stüssi seine Inspirationsquellen gründlich studiert und verarbeitet hat (Lizentiat in Musikethnologie, Universität Zürich, 1997), bevor er sie in sein Spiel und seinen Schreibstil hat einfliessen lassen.

            Félix Stüssi geht bei der Kreation wie ein Maler vor, der eine grosse Pallette an Farben zur Verfügung hat und keine Angst hat, damit zu experimentieren. Er liebt es, Modernität und Tradition einander gegenüberzustellen. Daraus enstehen faszinierende Kompositionen von wurzelbezogener Aktualität. Ein Stil, der als «post retro Worldjazz» bezeichnet werden könnte. Was wären die Farbvorstellungen im Kopf eines Malers,  ohne Pinsel und die passende Leinwand? In Stüssis neuem Quintett spielen einige der vielversprechendsten jungen Talente der kanadischen Szene.

Später nahm er Stunden mit Irene Schweizer, Markus Bischof, Christoph Baumann, Art Lande and Vince Benedetti. 1996 gewann er die ersten Preise (bester Solist, beste Band) am Zolliker Jazz Festival. 1998 ist Félix Stüssi nach Montréal, Kanada, ausgewandert, wo er als professioneller Pianist, Komponist, Arrangeur und Bandleader arbeitet.

            Alex Côté, Altosax, ist einer der aufgehenden Sterne der kanadischen Jazzszene. Trotz seines jungen Alters kann er bereits auf eine internationale Karriere zurückblicken. Im April 2004 ist er einer Einladung in die Schweiz gefolgt, um Kanada im EBU Jazz Orchestra (Bigband der European Broadcasting Union) zu vertreten. Bei den Konzerten in Schaffhausen und Lugano besetzte er jeweils den ersten Stuhl der Altosaxophone. Er hat sowohl Aufnahmen mit seiner eigenen Gruppe, dem «No Name Sextette», als auch mit der Combo «Effendi Jazz Lab» gemacht. Auch Bruno Lamarche,Tenorsax, macht immer mehr von sich reden. Als Mitglied des «Bernard Primeau jazz ensemble» war es ihm im Sommer 2004 vergönnt, mit dem legendären Gitarristen Philip Catherine aufzunehmen. Er ist an verschiedensten Projekten beteiligt, unter anderem als Mitglied der Band von Joel Miller, einem weiteren lokalen Saxtalent. Alex Côté und Bruno Lamarche sind alte Freunde. Es ist jedoch das erste Mal, dass sie gemeinsam in der gleichen Band spielen - was für ein Duo!

           Das gleiche gilt auch für das Gespann Clinton Ryder, Kontrabass, und Isaiah Ceccarelli, Schlagzeug. Sie bilden eine der solidesten und swingendsten Rhythmusgruppen Montreals. Clinton stammt aus Nanaimo, Britisch Kolumbien. Er arbeitet seit 1993 als Freelancer und hat rund fünfzehn Alben mit verschiedenen kanadischen Künstlern eingespielt. Auch Isaiah hat im kanadischen Westen das Licht der Welt erblickt, ist allerdings in Kalifornien aufgewachsen. Nach seinen Studien am Berklee College of Music in Boston und in Paris mit, unter anderen, Daniel Humair, hat er sich in Montreal niedergelassen. Im Jahre 2004 war er mit dem «Effendi Jazz Lab» und mit Benoît Charest und seinen «Triplettes de Belleville» auf Tour.
